1988 Alpine Renault GTA Turbo D501-135-J. Performance GT as only the French can do it. Attractive fiberglass body; stylish 2+2 interior; 2.5 liter PRV V6 – turbocharged and mounted in the rear.
Very attractive design which is both aerodynamic and effective – 197hp pushing just over 2500 lb and a top speed of approx. 150MPH. While offering generous 2+2 interior space with good visibility.
Exterior – looks fantastic. Original paint shows very well with just a couple small marks from it’s 35 years use. Glass and lenses are in good shape with some scratches on right-front 1/4 window glass & minor paint crazing on A pillars.
Interior – clean with nice dash / console / door panels / seats / headliner. Carpet us somewhat faded with a couple small spots. Aftermarket stereo with bluetooth (Japanese FM only abe to tune up to 90.0 MHz). Two pieces of trim cracked – base of shift-boot & under steering column.
Engine and Drivertrain – engine starts right up and runs well. Does not consume oil or leak. Brakes / steering / suspension / clutch / shifting / power all feel great. No unusual creaks or rattles.
Some liken it to a French take on the Porsche 911. The result is an engaging grand touring car with French panache. The French follow no-one; and no-one follows the French. But with a strog following globally, this is a rare classics with good parts availability (see below) for a practical and easy with live with classic.
Issues – no wheel center-caps; speedo intermittent; paint crazing on A pillars (common); trim under steering column cracked (may be shared with other Renault).
Service – March / April 2024
