1993 Mazda / Autozam AZ-1 – the mid-engine Kei sports-car with gullwing doors. Powered by Suzuki 660cc DOHC 12-valve 3-cylinder – turbocharged and inter-cooled. With a little over 1500 lb to move it delivers lively performance and comfortable at highway speeds.
This example has ~85k miles (138k km) – equipped with a few nice options / upgrades – limited slip differential; Watanabe wheels with new 175/50×13 tires; aftermarket coil over suspension; Fujitsubu exhaust; roof spoiler; trunk spoiler; bubble flares; seats tastefully recovered and new struts for the gullwing doors.
Runs and drives quite well – good power, good clutch, easy shifting, good alignment, brakes work well.
Issues: car originally red and repaint showing it’s age. Some corrosion on sheet steel under hood and pan – however interior floor pans are solid. Some door / window trim deformed or missing; taillights aged with one crack. I’ve done a basic recommissioning – fuel / oil / tires / putting some shake-down miles on it. New owner should budget for some further refresh but fair value for someone looking for a driver-quality AZ-1 or one you’re not afraid to modify.
