The R5 Turbo 2 – the lilliputian hot-rod that re-wrote the rules and left an impression.

Abarth established the formula for giant-killer racing cars in the 1950’s with their 600 based Corsas and Ford did so as well with the Lotus Cortina and later the dominant Ford Escort Mk1 & Mk2 Cosworth. Renault too, had a string of rear-engine rally cars from the 1960’s R8 Gordini through the 1970’s Alpine A110 and A310 and in the R5 Turbo they incorporated engine and chassis from the Alpine rally cars and experience gained in F1 with turbocharging – to create one of the most iconic cars of the 1980’s as Rallying moved into the Group B era.

Renault took their well-designed but sensible compact – and with the help of Marcello Gandini at Bertone and their in-house Alpine race department at Dieppe – were able to transform the humble 5 into the legendary 5 Turbo.

———-

This R5 Turbo 2 000923 is an homage to the prototype #598 car of Guy Fréquelin and Jean-Marc Andrié as driven in the 1979 Giro d’Italia with the traditional Calberson graphics but road equipment still in place.

R5 Turbo 2 with 108k kilometers. Sitting since the early 2000s. Has fresh fuel and filter and fires up and runs and drives down the road. Good oil pressure, cooling system and engine fans work as they should, develops good boost and engine sounds good. No unusual leaks or smells. 0

Issues:

  • rust in the rear hatch and near the headlights
  • tires are heavily weather checked
  • interior needs freshening
  • general recommissioning required
