Another neat Mazda AZ-1, the Autozam kei sportscar I love so much. This one has ~101k miles (163,260 km) and still under it’s Shakken (road worthiness) until Heisei 31 (2019).

Nicely equipped with MazdaSpeed hood and wheels; sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE01 and Fujitsubo exhaust – faster than a standard AZ-1 and suspension / brakes / steering / clutch all feel excellent.

Exterior is presentable – paint is a 7 footer with a couple areas with touch-up and failing clear coat.

Interior is good with nice seats – properly repaired with new foam ($800). AC blows cold and heater works well. Instrument binnacle modified for mounting an accessory on the dash as well couple cracks on the forward/right side (above the instruments).

As a driver, this is the best of 17 AZ-1 we’ve imported and factoring in the excellent driving qualities / features / mileage / shortcomings, we think it’s well priced appropriately.

The AZ1 is a really neat car – from the peak of the Japanese exuberance of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. With it’s gullwing doors, high sills, and mid-engine design and styling like a micro-supercar, the AZ1 brings a smile everywhere it goes. Powered by a turbocharged and inter-cooled 600cc twincam 3-cylinder delivering very usable performance – as they sale, ‘it’s more fun to drive a slow-car fast than a fast car slow’..
